8th TEI: Medication Review: A Powerful Tool for Interprofessional Patient Care

GAME-TEI Summit for Future Leaders 2026 | Bologna, Italy

The Global Alliance of Medical Excellence (GAME) Transnational Educational Initiative (TEI) for Future Leaders Summit 2026 brought together 38 medical and healthcare students and faculty from eight partner universities. Hosted by the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences at the University of Bologna, the Summit focused on the theme “Medication Review: A Powerful Tool for Interprofessional Patient Care”.

Over three intensive days, future healthcare professionals engaged in interactive workshops, technology-driven simulations, and case-based discussions designed to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and enhance patient safety in global clinical practice.

Summit Highlights

Day 1

The Summit opened with welcome remarks from Prof. Young-Mee Lee (Korea University), Prof. Michelle Leech (Monash University), and Prof. Elisabetta Poluzzi (University of Bologna).

• Knowing Self, Knowing Team: Faculty from the University of Nottingham led an interactive workshop exploring how self-awareness, personal working styles, and communication dynamics directly impact interprofessional medication reviews.

• Poster Presentations: Student delegates presented poster sessions examining how medication management operates across diverse global healthcare systems.

• Hands-on Parallel Workshops:

  • Prescribing Simulations: Hosted by LMU Munich, students explored how much educational scaffolding is needed when teaching rational prescribing.

  • VR Crisis Management: Moderated by the University of Bologna and hosted by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), students experienced a Virtual Reality (VR) simulation on interprofessional care during in-hospital cardiac arrest.

    
    

Day 2

• Generative AI & VR in Polypharmacy: A sharing from CUHK showcased how AI and VR tools can be leveraged for home-based polypharmacy management.

• Health Cost-Effectiveness & Clinical Practice: Insights into the Chinese diabetes outcome model in cost-effectiveness analysis (CUHK) and medication management in clinical practices in Korean tertiary hospitals (Korea University) provided a multi-angle view in Medication review and management.

• Virtual Ward Rounds & Case Studies: After participating in a virtual ward round exercise (Monash University) and Medication review case sharing (University of Bologna), students were assigned complex patient cases. Working in transnational groups, delegates spent the afternoon analysing medication review challenges to prepare for final presentations.

  
  

Day 3

• Interprofessional Prescribing Workshop: Monash University educators facilitated an online session featuring their novel pharmacy/medicine ward training workshop about prescribing.

• Group Presentations: Student teams delivered 10-minute talks titled "Challenges and Opportunities for Medication Review: What Have We Learnt and What is the Future of Prescribing?", integrating insights on patient safety, technology, and interprofessional dynamics.

• Looking to the Future: The Summit concluded with faculty feedback, the sharing from the TEI Alumni Network and Student Advisory Group, and the awarding of certificates.

Throughout the Summit, students gained insights into:

1. Patient Safety First: Understanding medication review and its importance for patient safety in clinical practice.

2. Interprofessional Synergy: Appreciating the distinct and complementary roles that doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and health professionals play in prescribing.

3. Tech-Enhanced Care: Envisioning how AI, VR, and simulation tools can transform communication and decision-making.

By building global friendships and professional networks across Australia, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Sweden and the UK, these future leaders leave Bologna ready to shape the future of collaborative healthcare.
